The ABCs are all well and good, but don't forget about D. Most vitamins abound in a nourishing, whole-foods diet, but vitamin D is harder to find. Called the sunshine vitamin because our skin synthesizes it when exposed to sunlight, it behaves more like a hormone in the body. You may not know that D's importance goes beyond bone health, with studies showing that sufficient levels of D may help with cancer prevention and heart health. New research suggests that sufficient D may also boost cardio-respiratory fitness, aka "exercise capacity"—a measure of the heart and lungs to supply muscles with oxygen during exercise. Good cardio-respiratory fitness doesn't just help you run 10Ks or play tennis; it's linked to better health and a longer life. The study showed that for every incremental increase in vitamin D, there was a corresponding incremental increase in exercise capacity. More research is needed to determine the ideal level of vitamin D for fitness, but diet-wise, you can find D in fatty fish such as wild salmon and fortified yogurt or milk. If your levels are low, as measured by a simple blood test, talk with your doctor about taking a vitamin D2 or D3 supplement.
